    נַחְשוֹלm. (חָשַׁל; Syr. מחשולא, P. Sm. 140 4) a crushing wind (cmp. 1 Kings 19:11); esp. ( שבים) נ׳ gale on high sea, also naḥshol, a spirit. Tosef. Yoma II, 4; Yoma 38a (Y. ib. III, 41a סער גדול). Tosef.B. Mets. VII, 14; B. Kam. 116b; Y.B. Mets.VI, end, 11a ספינה שעמד עליה נ׳ והיקלוכ׳ if a gale threatened the ship, and they lighted it. Pesik. R. s. 32 אחזו נחשולה (corr. acc.). Num. R. s. 13 (play on נחשון) על שם שירד תחלה לנ׳ שבים because he was the first to go down to the surf (or to Naḥshol) in the sea. Gitt.56b עמד עליו נ׳ שביםוכ׳ a naḥshol in the sea stood up against him to drown him; Yalk. Koh. 972 נ׳ של ים.
